Kats on Red

Oil on canvas

This piece is very much in the style I've been aiming at. I'm very detail-oriented generally, so painting something that suggests rather that sharply depicts is the most common challenge I set myself. The subject was a wonderfully soft-feeling photograph of a friend, which to me was calling out to be painted. I think the darkness and minimal colour usage (only three, really - white red and blue) allowed me to be more vague about the brushwork, making me have to suggest rather than depict.

This piece lives in my house - selected by my husband to go in our bedroom, paired with this painting.
