Oil on Canvas
Continuing on from Self Portrait (Red Rope) was a bit of a challenge. That piece hit all the things I wanted my style to hit. So, the first piece after was always going to be difficult. This, then, was the result. I replicated the same methods, but with a new subject and different emotional focus. I believe it worked, generally. I'm happy with how the colour usage can be adapted to a more fiddly image - the previous one had very little detail beyond the rope, whereas this new piece has a whole upper body, hands and all.
It's certainly different - the brushwork needed to se the same style on this painting required a smaller brush for some of the finer details such as the hair and the hands. I feel it still manages to evoke detail without really depicting any, though. Get close and it all breaks down into blurs of colour and light - but stand back, and it comes to life.
