Oil on Canvas
There was a painting at a friends house that I always loved - the style was very much broad strokes and very little blending. This painting is perhaps the first one of mine to start to approach that style. Up close, it breaks into a swirl or grey, a dart of red, a fringe of white. But when you see the whole, your mind reads the subject from the chaos.
Finding the right balance of hues without diving into endless subtle variations of colour was the challenge. I aimed to use no more than the three primary colours, with black and white to shade. There's definitely more than those basics on the canvas, but the restriction did help keep the brushwork bold, the colours simpler.
