Aitchsea Sunset

Mar 2021
160 x 160mm
Acrylic on plywood

This piece is a real-life replica of an artifact generated on a Minecraft server I joined in the 2020 pandemic. Originally, it was a screenshot of someone elses view of my character stood against a sunset on a pier I'd built. In-game, one can create 'paintings' by laying blocks on the ground and creating a map of the area, replicating the in-game painting objects. Building the (3d!) map that produced this 2d map on the server took a LONG time.

I then decided I wanted a physical copy of this item: So I scaled the image to real life dimensions - I went for 10mm being one pixel wide. It was surprisingly hard to be neat painting all those squares adjacent, and getting the colours just right. Ultimately though, I got my real-life Minecraft painting. If you squint, maybe you can just about see the sunset from that long-archived world?
