Kneeling in White

Oct 2020
110 x 240mm
Oil on plywood

I think the source image this was based on had the subject kneeling in a garden, presumably tied up to a tree branch out of frame. I found the surroundings distracting, and a bit irrelevant to the mood I wanted to evoke. Isolation, or focus, or perhaps both were what I wanted to convey. I kept the greyscale colouring of the original, though I definitely heightened it for the painting. I sometimes purposefully use a larger brush to do my work to stop myself from getting lost in detail: I think it worked rather well here.

...Though I definitely cheated with a very fine brush to get his mouth right.
