Royalty (Rozina)

Mar 2020
Acrylic on plywood

In late 2019, I attended a queer takeover event at the Queens House Greenwich with my friend Rozina. There was an exhibit of portrait photographs depicting people of colour in the style of historical royal portraits - a position very few POC would have been in historically. There was a dress up box nearby, so we took the opportunity to do our own version of this! This painting was the result - one of the photographs I took of Rozina was just perfect, really capturing the regal air and poise of traditional royal portraits.

I didn't actually tell Rozina I'd painted this until it was done and I gave it to her: Possibly slightly unfair of me to spring the surprise portrait painting on her, but she has told me that her entire family are incredibly jealous of her having her very own royal portrait!

This painting is in a private collection
